CHAPTER EIGHT
Hawaii seemed like a sensuous dream with its flower-scented air, brilliant light and the gently relaxing sound of ocean waves rumbling up and hissing back down the smooth sand. Annie slept through part of the flight. They’d flown from Denver to San Francisco, then switched planes and taken another flight to Oahu.
She’d been tired when they’d arrived. Remembering her gynecologist’s advice’ she’d taken a short nap when they’d finally reached the hotel. But now, after a shower and a room service snack of fresh pineapple, she stood out on the balcony of their suite overlooking Waikiki Beach and the awe-inspiring view of Diamond Head.
Though hours had passed since they’d left the penthouse in Denver, because of the time change it seemed as if their flight had taken no time at all. The time changes astounded her. The changes in her life amazed her even more. So much in her life had been transformed in so short a time.
While she’d been wiping down tables and filling ketchup bottles at The End, serving up beers and cheeseburgers as she evaded groping masculine hands, she’d focused her thoughts on getting out of town. She’d never thought about really traveling, let alone flying thousands of miles to a tropical paradise with a man like Ben Tanner.
He’d set up camp in the main living room of their suite, with papers, graphs and charts all over the large, glass-topped coffee table by the couch. She heard him talking on his cell inside as she stood on the balcony; one of countless conversations since they’d arrived, something about an investment.
She had no idea what this business trip involved, how he managed his money, what he was up to, only that he was extremely good at what he did. Clearly he’d made his family a lot of money. But there were times when she wondered if this man she’d married ever let himself have any fun.
There was a darkness to Ben, a seriousness she realized was a character constant. Had he always been this way? Was it a part of his character because he was the oldest son? Had he always taken his responsibilities so seriously? And she wondered, as she leaned over the balcony and let the trade winds caress her bare arms, if he’d been different before his father died. Alone with Ben, in this luxurious suite right on the Pacific Ocean, Annie realized how little she truly knew about the man she’d married.
She wanted to know more.
And she wanted more than mere sex. She wanted a true feeling of intimacy with Ben, a connection that, while physical, went beyond just the merging of two bodies. Annie felt she was on her way to this sort of intimacy. She genuinely liked Ben and she loved the way he treated her. No man in her entire life had ever been as good to her.
Throughout the flight, while she’d been awake, she’d thought about what she was planning to do. She’d gone back and forth inside her head, pros and cons, worst case scenarios, best .
